I suppose there is another table, unseen to us, that says ‘uomini’, but I find it odd that Italians separate the vote — and least, in their list keeping — between men and women. Am I translating that wrong or do we have a great photo of the plasticized Berlusconi walking away from ‘women’ (donne) to cast his vote?

This is a pool photo of George Zimmerman and his lead counsel Mark O’Mara a Zimmerman’s hearing on his motion to delay trial February 5, 2013. I found it interesting that both men have gotten overweight since their intro to the American public (it’s not just the camera angle that enlarges O’Mara). And in this country, “overweight” means disintegrate.

Here’s O’Mara at his first news conference. Maybe the message isn’t about my body image-centric viewpoint, but from the idea that when justice has been delayed long enough for you to get huge, it’s been delayed enough. The judge denied Zimmerman’s motion at the hearing.

To start with, I think this photo is one...

Bag’s Take-Away:

To start with, I think this photo is one of those that won’t catch much notice due to its subject matter. The American public doesn’t care much about Karzai negotiating for American troop strength to remain at high levels in Afghanistan after 2014. After all, this transition will occur after the next Afghan election, i.e., after Karzai and his family are safely ensconced in Dubai or some other safe haven. But in terms of composition, color, and symbolism, I really like this Alex Wong photo. The deep, brilliant colors of Karzai’s traditional Uzbek coat play off against the crisp whites and deep blues of the honor guard at attention behind him. His face is lit heroically as he takes a statuesque pose. But he stands as if supported by a dwindling number of soldiers to his back and with the “zero option” trial balloon floated by the Obama Administration, even that number is in question.

Though a floated balloon doesn’t always become a reality, Karzai’s “heroic” stance during this visit to the U.S. may actually be a last stand against strong public opinion in America.

via The Charlotte Observer

I’m thoroughly grateful for the way the great Christopher Morris captured post-9/11 and “War on Terror” America. To be honest, though, I’m not sure he exactly nailed Campaign ‘12. If you take a look at his at “On the Road” slideshow
at TIME, I see it expressing a little more of the anxiety, pensiveness and “Stepford USA” of the Bush campaigns.

Nevertheless, this one photo is smashing. I’m not sure if I’ve seen a better take on Romney, the Two America, and how thoroughly disconnected the man demonstrated himself to be from Main Street than this photo taken the day of his sham “non-campaign” hurricane food drive.

But, why post this now, Campaign 12 already consigned to the history books? Because of the challenge of keeping focus on the disconnect as we launch ahead.

They really believed it. They were ready to get working. Even if it meant using a photo of Obama’s inauguration in their representation of Romney’s special day.

But what this truly underlines is the difference between the science party and the “no science” party. Had they looked at the U.S. Census and read analysis of the popular vote in the last two elections, they would see they overestimated the white vote by 5-6 percent and no pixels would have died in putting up a transition team website.

Clinton wasn’t talking about electoral math or polling when he said “People ask me all the time how we delivered four surplus budgets. What new ideas did we bring? I always give a one-word answer: arithmetic.” My take is that if you can use math in one endeavor, you can use it in another.

I like this photo of Stacie Laughton, the first transgender woman to be elected to office in New Hampshire. Women candidates have brought about many firsts in New Hampshire electoral history but, like all women running for office, how they look matters. Yet no one is looking at Laughton in this photo. And she won.

Team Romney struggled with the optics all campaign. Here on the last day, in a shot meant to be nostalgic and emotional, instead what we see (evoking shuttered factories, even Gitmo) is Mitt waving through a fence at distant admirers. There are at least 4 variations on this scene, by the way, taken by pool reporters on Instagram

Mitt was legion on the trail this year for the number of photo ops with police officers. Lest you think Romney is a big law-and-order man, though, the real backstory here is that cops are the easiest people to grab for a picture with the pool photographers around. …You know why this is true, btw? The vast majority of these pics are taken on tarmacs where law-and-order folks are typically dispatched.

I’m constantly taken by his ability to capture meanings on multiple levels. Take his images from candidate Romney’s final blitz, for example. On face value, Stephen Crowley is merely offering glimpses into stagecraft and campaign ephemera. Look further though, and the photos are silent editorials, even essays about the candidate, his personality and political culture.

I want to touch on a few of Crowley’s images that appeared in yesterday’s New York Times slideshow entitled: “To the White House? Or Home to Massachusetts?” as Crowley sees Mitt back to the land of the 1%.
