The “Most Different” News Photos from 9/11 Commemoration. #2: “Grief Meets Political Celebrity”

Of the 1000 or so newswire photos of the 9/11 memorial ceremony I looked at, almost every one is profoundly somber, the grief of the families searing through everything. That’s why I thought these two photos were especially unusual. I didn’t see this in the photos of Obama or Bush with the families (and I know, both personally and professionally, how transient grief is), but in these two shots, at least, it was jarring to see how, in the presence of Mrs. Clinton, she wasn’t catering to them, but rather, these 9/11 family members suddenly shifted into fans. 

Sad to think, but in 2011 America, does that count for empathy, too?
