From my reader, Tom, in Greece (clearly with an eye to the aesthetics): “There is so much contrast — color, clothing, posture — and the other photographer looks great.” From my end (though I do love the photog’s custom riot helmet), I see: hippy punching goes international.

Introducing: Louk, the Greek Riot Dog! Riots and uprisings and demonstrations have become so embedded in cultural/political imagery, we have anthropomorphized the event. What’s next, “Squiggles, the Flood Trout”? … because water and uprisings seem to be the 2011 themes.

One of the interesting things about the “Nazi Euro” in this Greek protest photo is the lack of crudeness in the sign. It’s at once believable and “a tell” to what this is really about: Greek resentment toward the rest of the EU, but especially the slick, prosperous Germans perceived to be dictating to the humbled, hairy, have-nots of Greece.
The unspoken communication: ‘We may be all too fallible, but YOU used to be a Nazi and you’re trying to make us a puppet state again.’
