Bag’s Take-Away:
Interesting that the rest of the Obama family watched Michelle’s convention speech in The Treaty Room. As we wrote about the speech in our post today, Michelle Obama with the Sound Off, her mission was nothing short of updating the American people on the Obama’s 2008 contract of hope with the goal of reengagement. By the way, here’s an earlier Bag post on the painting above the Obamas’ heads.

Bag’s Take-Away:
The media (justifiably) goes after Romney for taking the day off yesterday, the newly-minted candidate not only choosing not to acknowledge Labor Day (maybe he thought he was snubbing the union movement?). Rather than lying low and just doing a b-b-q, however, he’s out doing the boating/yachting thing. Like the vacation over Fourth of July while Obama bypassed Camp David or Martha Vineyard for campaigning on Main Street, Romney’s response (as it was at the time) is that he’s earned his vacations. Anyway, it’s belaboring the obvious to say that yesterday’s optics are terrible — especially since that’s the way my local news channel framed it. It’s like Romney is doing to himself what it took Rove to do to Kerry in 2004 … in framing a tall, handsome dude as extremely rich, out of touch, and a man of expedience: Same tune, different body of water.

Maybe #Eastwooding stands for message mis-management? Clint needled the president last night for running around in a gas guzzling plane. Here’s Romney’s new ride, unveiled today.

Bag’s Take-Away:
The fact is, you can’t deal with the subject of Christie without also addressing his girth. He plays it up all the time (the best defense is a good offense?) and, in terms of optics, it certainly reinforces the GOP philosophy surrounding the goodness of wealth accumulation. Still, the photo of the Governor visiting the convention stage is a visual joke at his expense, a blimp-size analogy between the enormous, round, white hat — on top of an enormous head, obviously — with the enormously round politician looking in that direction. I don’t have a photo credit, by the way, but the pic originally appeared in this post at NBC’s photo blog. Perhaps, for the reasons outlined, they took it down?

Update: My bad, photo is by Josh Haner and was published by the NYT as part of its RNC daily slideshow.
