Bag’s Take-Away:

NatJournal OBL cover does twist on V-J Day and ambiguous meaning of bin Laden demise. Pic also draws contrast to USA chants, fist pumps and breast beating in Times Square last Sunday.

Bag’s Take-Away:

I find this Times Square display pathetically gratuitous and jingoistic, especially knowing it was produced and distributed by NASDAQ’s media arm! How else does one interpret this, given the sponsorship, than Wall St. retribution, topped off with the use of windows — after bin Laden’s already been terminated — to poke his eyes out.

Plain and simple, this is the kind of image — twisting the body in the wind, three days later, Madison Avenue-style in the heart of America’s entertain and tourist center — that “makes them” hate us (and our tall buildings, and and our power).

The issue, featuring a red X over bin Ladens face, will hit newsstands on Thursday, May 5, 2011. The magazine says it is the fourth cover in TIMEs history to feature the red X. Other covers showed Adolf Hitler on May 7, 1945, Saddam Hussein on April 21, 2003, and Abu Musab al-Zarqawi on June 19, 2006.)

May 2 wire pic of soldiers outside OBL compound naturally raises suspicions Pakistan knew.

Although I don’t crop as a rule, the importance of the viral/historic White House “bin Ladin raid” photo deserves an exception. Key leaders with everything on the line. #2 Hillary Clinton.

Cell phone photo from firefight at bin Laden compound. Looks like soldier (right) near wall between 2 explosions with copter, low, just beyond.
(Beyond the drama, great example of what’s wrong with photo galleries. Who shot this? Who released this? At what stage was this? Etc.)
(photo: Reuters caption (via MSNBC): The compound is seen in flames after it was attacked late on May 1 in this still image taken from cellphone video footage.)

If Obama and the White House have maintained ultimate modesty around the bin Laden kill, the wall of front pages taped to the press room wall, at least, is a bit of a shout out.

As opposed to … Shock-and-Awe missile strike on Hussein — a sad replacement for Tora Bora, anyway; Blackhawk Down; and failed U.S. Iran Embassy rescue…

The clean-and-simple picture Obama’s predecessors could only wish for…

Tidying up the loose ends in Abbottabad. (US blows up it’s own helicopter after successful mission.)
