Today’s Tebow-sanity … or, what passes for stained glass in the temple of the Jets.
(photo: Richard Perry/The New York Time caption: Tim Tebow, at the lectern, the New York Jets’ newly acquired backup quarterback, addressed his first news conference as a Jet at the team’s training center in Florham Park, N.J. He was traded to the Jets by the Denver Broncos, a team he guided to an American Football Conference West title last season.)

New ESPN cover cites sexual abuse as the sports “story of 2011.” But also note the NIKE’s behind the chicken wire when everything else about the kid is generic, and virginal. The brand ID can be seen to implicate the huge role of $$$ in college sports. Remember the tell-tale line about abuse? It’s not about sex, it’s about power. I’m sure Bush did it, too, but it’s funny seeing Obama watching from one side, and then the other, of the Army-Navy football game. Besides one more fail-safe military photo-op, I suppose he was looking for consensus.(photos: AP caption #1: President Barack Obama sits on the bleacher with Army cadets during the second half of the 112th edition of the annual Army vs. Navy football NCAA college football game at FedEx Field in Landover, Md. , Saturday, Dec. 10, 2011.. caption #2: President Barack Obama, center, sits in the stands with Navy Midshipmen during the first half of an NCAA college football game against Army in Landover, Md. , Saturday, Dec. 10, 2011. Navy defeated Army 27-21, their 10th straight victory in the rivalry.)

Shaking my head over the riot pix from Penn State, especially the demolishing of this TV truck. The powers-that-be can whittle away student loans, health care, the rest of the social safety net, and crash the economy out of rampant financial speculation, but mess with college football, one of the strongest opiates standing between students and what’s really happening to them beyond the stadium, and there’s hell to pay.A grotesque understatement, perhaps, to say Penn State is pretty confused about the definition of abuse.
